Dear Summer Help Wanted,
School being out is a transition. Transition is hard. Have a plan in place.
Our tendency is to relax structure during the summer, however, our children thrive on predictability. Your schedule may be different, but have a schedule all the same. Be aware of the many transitions when school is out – we generally do more activities and interface with more people. This is frequently a trigger for our children.
It is okay to be boring . . . it is okay to limit interactions . . . it is okay to not entertain our children. Many parents plan amazing vacations that end up being not so amazing because the children cannot handle the changes in routine and insecurity of not being in a familiar place.
Adjust your expectations, plan what works for your family, and count the days until school starts again!
